Day starts cold (for Baja) at 64 F but is up tp 80 by 0900. Saw on the news that mid-west is getting snow with temps down to 6 … sure glad I down live here.

The Black-headed Grosbeak is a winter visitor to Baja. He arrives in Nov and will head north about April or May. Enjoy him while he is here.

Today we’ll discuss the Phainopepla. The Phainopepla is a flycatcher alto he is often called a black cardinal because of the cardinal-like crest.

Today’s rather unusal bird is the Pyrrhuloxia. Sometimes called the gray cardinal. It is indeed in the cardinal family, but has a unique bill shape. The bill is much like a parrots bill and indicates that this bird is a seed feeder.

This morning’s featured bird is the Verdin. A small (4″) very active insect eater, that will visit orange slices at your feeder.

The Cactus Wren is found in the SW states and through out Mexico. This wren is the largest of the wren family. As with other wrens they are mottled with, brown, black and white markings.

Blue Grosbeak 014 (Small)

A winter visitor on his migration south. Males at maturity are blue with russet backs. Females are plain russet/brown. Typical large stubby beak (Grosbeak).
