The Merlin – Falco columbaries a small falcon.

And a great day it is for me … I phographed a rare bird. Have not seen or photographed the Merlin in several years. And this morning I saw not one but TWO. I ‘flushed’ them both while driving. Luckily one landed, while the other circled over his head.

American Avocet – Recurvirostra americana in winter plumage.

About a week ago I found a small 3-4 acre rainwater pond and photographed the Avocet (bottoms-up) and White-faced Ibis. Decided to return and see if any new arrivals have shown up. What a wonderful surprise .. birding as good as it gets.

The Brown Pelican Pelicanus occidentails is a common resident in Baja.

This morning I birded at a place that I call the North Lagoon. A brackish 30 acre body of water on the beach between Los Barriles and La Ribera on the eastern side of the Baja. The Tropic of Cancer is but a few miles south of this lagoon.

Male Costa’s Hummingbird- the ‘purplr flash’

Rain .. wonderful, beautiful rain. We needed it amd I’m very happy. The last four days have been rain on and off, light drizzle to tropical downpours. I don’t have a ‘proper rain guage’, but do have a 2lb coffee can that is eight inches high. It over-flowed on the second day and I didn’t go out and empty it.

The Osprey also known as the ‘fish hawk’ or ‘sea hawk’

Two days of low overcast have kept me home in the mornings. Today starts with solid overcast. Not enough light for good photos, so I fuss around the house until almost ten. The clouds have thinned at bit and I can (barely) see my shadow.

Who are these birds? – find out below

Had not been to this site in about 3 months, and after my experience it will probably be another 3 months. Sat there from 0715 until 0815 without photographing a single bird! Saw a few fly-byes, but nothing else.

Crested Caracara – Caracara cheriway

Had not been back to the basil farm in over six months. It’s a eight mile run in the arroyo. Had not checked out the conditions since our rains of a month ago.
