More on the “Purple Flash”

I’ve been trying to capture the ‘Purple Flash’ on film for some time now. What I mean by the “Purple Flash” is the brillant purple color of the head and gorget (chin whisker feathers) when the sun is just right. The “Purple Flash”

In my home area of Southern Baja Mexico, we have two species of hummingbirds, the Costa’s (Calytpe costae) and the endemic Xantus’ Hummingbird (Hylocharli xantusu).

The male Costa’s has a purple crown and a long purple gorget (chin feathers). Trying to get a photograph of this brillant purple color is a challenge to any photographer. (more…)
